Does the Student Leap Card Work on Dublin Express? Everything Students Need to Know

If you're a student in Ireland, chances are your Leap Card is one of the most important items in your wallet. It gets you on the bus, the Luas and the DART at half the adult fare – and since September 2022, that 50% discount has extended to commercial bus operators too, including Dublin Express.

So yes – your Student Leap Card does work on Dublin Express. But the process is slightly different to how you'd use it on Dublin Bus or Irish Rail. This guide explains everything: who qualifies, how to actually use the discount, which routes it applies to, and how much you'll save.

The Short Answer: Yes, But Via the TFI Go App

Dublin Express accepts the Student Leap Card and the Young Adult (19–25) Leap Card on its Dublin services – but you don't tap your card on a reader when you board. Instead, you use the TFI Go app to purchase your discounted ticket in advance, then show it to the driver when boarding.

  • How it works: Open the TFI Go app → select your Dublin Express route → your 50% discount is applied automatically when you log in with your Student or Young Adult Leap Card details → download your ticket → show your driver.

  • ✔ Dublin Express tip: Download the TFI Go app before you travel and link your Leap Card in advance. The ticket downloads to your phone and can be used straight away – no printing needed.

Which Leap Card Do You Need?

There are two cards that give you 50% off on Dublin Express. Here's which one applies to you:

Young Adult (19–25) Leap Card
  • Available to all 19 to 25 year olds, right up to your 26th birthday.

  • You don't need to be a student – this discount is for everyone in the age bracket.

  • Apply online at leapcard.ie. You'll need a valid photo ID (passport, driving licence or learner permit) and a live selfie for verification.

  • The card is posted to your home address within 5 working days of approval.

Student Leap Card
  • For full-time students (15+ hours per week) who are either 16–18 years old, or 26 and above.

  • Students aged 19–25 should use the Young Adult Leap Card instead.

  • Your course must run for at least 6 months (25 weeks).

  • International students studying in Ireland are also eligible.

  • Apply online at leapcard.ie and collect from a Student Leap Card agent (such as your Students' Union office) once approved.

Already have a Student Leap Card? If you're 19–25 and have a Student Leap Card, you don't need to swap to a Young Adult Leap Card. Just use your Student Leap Card as normal – the 50% discount applies automatically.

Which Dublin Express Routes Does the Discount Apply To?

The 50% student and young adult discount is available on the following Dublin Express routes:

  • Route 782 – Dublin Airport ↔ Dublin City Centre

  • Route 783 – Dublin Airport ↔ Terenure

  • Route 784 – Dublin Airport ↔ Dublin City Centre (via south city)

Note: The discount is not available on the Dublin Express Route 785 (Dublin–Belfast service). Full adult fares apply on the Belfast route regardless of card type.

Step-by-Step: How to Use Your Student Discount on Dublin Express

Step 1: Get Your Card

Apply for your Young Adult or Student Leap Card at leapcard.ie. Allow up to 5 working days for delivery or collection. If you need it quickly, some Students' Union offices offer same-day collection once your online application is approved – check with your college.

Step 2: Download the TFI Go App

The TFI Go app is available on both iOS and Android. Download it for free and create an account. You'll need to link your Leap Card number during setup – you'll find this on the back of your card.

Step 3: Purchase Your Ticket

Open the app, select Dublin Express from the operator list, choose your route (782, 783 or 784) and your journey direction. The 50% discount will be applied automatically based on your card type. Purchase and download the ticket to your phone.

Step 4: Board the Coach

When your Dublin Express arrives, simply activate your ticket in the app and show it to the driver as you board. No tapping, no printing – just your phone screen.

Step 5: Take Your Seat

That's it. Sit back and enjoy the journey. Dublin Express coaches are modern and comfortable, with free Wi-Fi, USB charging points and air conditioning – perfect for catching up on study or winding down after a long week.

Common Questions from Students

Can I tap my Leap Card on the reader when I board?

Not on Dublin Express. Unlike Dublin Bus or the Luas, Dublin Express does not have card readers on board. Your discount must be pre-purchased through the TFI Go app. Make sure you've bought your ticket before you arrive at the stop.

What if I forget to book in advance?

If you haven't bought a discounted ticket in advance, you can still purchase a full-price ticket at dublinexpress.ie or on the day – but you'll pay the standard adult fare. Dublin Express does not accept cash on board, so you'll need a debit or credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay.

Does the Visitor Leap Card give a student discount?

No. The Leap Visitor Card is for tourists and does not give any discount on Dublin Express. Only the Young Adult (19–25) Leap Card and the Student Leap Card are eligible for the 50% reduction.

I'm an international student – can I apply?

Yes. Full-time international students studying in Ireland are eligible for the Student Leap Card. You'll need to upload your acceptance letter from your Irish university (in English or Irish) as part of the application. Once approved, you can use the card on Dublin Express just like any other student.

My card says 'Young Adult' – will the driver accept it?

Yes. Both the Young Adult (19–25) Leap Card and the Student Leap Card are accepted. Your ticket purchased through the TFI Go app will show the discounted fare, and your card is the proof of eligibility. Have your card ready to show the driver if asked.

Does the discount work on night services?

Yes – Dublin Express runs 24 hours a day on its Dublin routes, and the student discount through the TFI Go app applies at all times of day and night.
