Driving towards a Greener Future with Dublin Express
Published: 29th November 2024
One of our biggest leaps toward sustainability has been our switch to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a fuel source for our entire Dublin fleet. Why HVO? It’s a renewable, sustainable alternative to diesel that significantly cuts down on carbon emissions by up to 90%. So, every time you take the bus with us, you’re helping to make Dublin’s air a little cleaner. This switch to HVO also results in 86% fewer particulate emissions and cuts down on sulphur content, making it a cleaner choice for both the environment and urban air quality.
Our move to HVO fuel has already made a big impact. Switching our 80,000 litres of diesel each month to HVO fuel has reduced our C02 emissions by over 200,000 kilograms. And to keep things efficient, our HVO fuel even has a longer shelf life, up to 10 years compared to diesel’s one-year lifespan. Every coach in our fleet powered by HVO is like taking 12 diesel vehicles off the road in terms of emissions—a statistic that really drives home how much of a difference cleaner fuel can make.
Route optimisation isn’t just about getting passengers from A to B as quickly as possible—it’s also a great way to reduce emissions. By leveraging Dublin’s bus lanes and the Dublin Port Tunnel, we can avoid congested areas, which cuts down on unnecessary idling and fuel consumption. Our streamlined routes into the city, especially those connecting passengers to transport hubs like Heuston and Connolly stations, help make travel easier while reducing the city’s overall car traffic. By giving travellers convenient, efficient options, we’re encouraging a shift from private vehicles to public transport—one of the best ways to ease congestion and reduce emissions citywide.
We’re proud to be a part of Dublin’s vibrant tourism industry, and we’ve built some fantastic partnerships to make tourism more sustainable. Working with local hotels and attractions like the Jameson Distillery and EPIC: The Irish Immigration Museum, we encourage tourists to use our services rather than renting cars or using taxis. Not only do our customers enjoy a more sustainable way to see Dublin, but they also benefit from special offers and perks at these partner attractions when they travel with Dublin Express.
We’re also partners with Irish Rail which has allowed us to integrate coach and rail services. Providing seamless travel options that reduce the need for private car journeys, especially for those coming from outside Dublin. With nearly 39.2 million people using Irish airports in 2023 alone, being able to connect Heuston Station and Connolly Station. This partnership has huge potential to ease congestion around the city and promote greener travel for those coming to and from the airport.
